Part 2-Living with a best friend: Moving on

Published by loislane26 under Women, youth Edit This

I’m still Facebook friends with the roommate I mentioned in my earlier blog. This summer she left me a message that said Happy Birthday. That was really the first time we had made contact in years. I was cordial and said thank you. We messaged back and forth.

Then after I had posted something on my Facebook status about a TV show she had sent me a message through Facebook chat about it. Not only did we talk about the TV show but she started asking me questions about life, where I was living, if I still talked to some people from college. I didn’t want to be petty and not talk. It’s been years since we had our falling out.

It just had me thinking, did other people I have stopped being friends with and exboyfriends I haven’t talked to still wonder what I was up to? I guess it was kind of flattering in a way.

When my roommate and I were best friends we said we’d be each other’s maids of honor. Now we are both planning weddings and of course we won’t stick to our oaths made long ago.

It’s ok to chat on Facebook but as far as meeting up with her or talking on a weekly basis, I would probably feel awkward.

Sometimes doors that are closed are never re-opened. I guess the big question is, “When is the right time to re-open a door” to friendship?

For years I had this resentment for the way the friendship ended. But then, I moved on, realizing not everyone stays friends forever. We have that mentality in grade school that we’ll always be friends with people. Crap happens and things change. It just makes us thankful to have those lifelong friends.

Also, I’ve learned acceptance and stopped the angry thoughts. When we dwell on bad things that have happened, it is unhealthy. I am at the place now where I am glad my old roommate has found happiness even though we aren’t friends anymore.
