Volunteering
I learned all about volunteering when I was in Girl Scouts. When I was in elementary school, I served as a Brownie for two years. A few of my close friends also joined so it was cool to hang out with them.
What I didn’t like about Girl Scout was selling cookies. I think my mom would just take an order form into her work and to my grandparents. I’d never get the top prize for selling. I’d just be happy to sell something.
For some reason I remember going to our mall to see the governor at the time. I think it was Casey. It was soo long ago. Anyway, I don’t remember doing anything important there. Maybe it was the anniversary of Girl Scouts. I remember I didn’t want to be standing in the middle of the mall with the governor. I wanted to shop for toys instead. I was really disappointed we didn’t go shopping.
The last straw of Girl Scouts was when we had to plant flowers in a park, like a beautification project. I had no problem with making the park look better, but the day we had planned for planting the flowers, it poured. Did the leaders postpone? Nope. I sat on a bench with my friend Katie, who shared her raincoat with me and the leaders were angry with us. I was really upset about that and still am to this day. I can’t believe the leaders went through with it. Most of us were about 7 or 8. We could have gotten really sick. The whole experience kind of turned me off from volunteering for a while.
I don’t mind it now. I don’t like selling items. I don’t like being pushy. What is cool is asking for donations. That way the person can give like a dollar for a fundraiser and they know they are helping in some way. It’s great to help out just not in the pouring rain.
